Make No Mistake: The Game Is Dead And Won

Success is marked on a single side
Squashing a rounded character flat with pride
Fitting the narrow slit of riches poor
As all coins together sit locked by one door.

A flattened friend holds himself alone
Looking at books, pictures, glancing at the phone
All these things to keep him company
All these things suffused with sympathy.

Jokes, songs, unsuccessful laughter
Tales of old, some mindless barter
Are all immeasurably useless things
The deeps of space, the depths of seas.

Of course we have the answers
Taught and learnt as all we have
To sing ourselves asleep like weary dancers
Dreading the dance of all we have.
